Who we are

Roofing Roughnecks is one of Kenney Construction's specialty divisions. Kenney Construction was founded in 2019 by Frank Kenney, who has worked in construction since he was 14, and is licensed, insured and bonded in Virginia (DPOR #2705187519). The company is based in Herndon, a short drive down Route 28 or Route 7 from most Sterling neighborhoods, and serves Sterling alongside Ashburn, Herndon, Reston, Chantilly and the rest of the Fairfax and Loudoun communities around them. This site exists for one reason: to help Sterling homeowners make a good roofing decision, whether or not they hire us.

Real roof replacements in Sterling

Roofing Roughnecks has completed more than one full roof replacement in Sterling, handled directly by the division rather than subcontracted to another company. The photos below come from those jobs: shingles going on and the finished roof on the first, and new decking and a two-story colonial mid-replacement on the second.

Why Sterling roofs need a local roofing contractor

Sterling is not a town. It is an unincorporated part of Loudoun County, so building permits come from the county's Department of Building and Development, not from a town hall, and the rules differ from Herndon or Reston just across the county line. Most of the area also sits inside a homeowners or community association, from Sugarland Run to Countryside to Cascades, and those associations often have a say in shingle color and material.

The housing stock spans six decades. Sterling Park's first houses were sold in 1963, Sugarland Run filled in during the 1970s and 1980s, Countryside was built from 1981 to 1991, and the Cascades association was formed in 1990. That means a roofer here might see a 35-year-old original roof, a second or third roof on a 1960s house, and a first replacement on a 1990s colonial, all in the same week. A good scope starts by figuring out which one you have.

What to expect when you call

  • A look at the roof, and the attic where it is safe and relevant, before anyone recommends repair or replacement.
  • A straight answer on whether the problem looks isolated or roof-wide.
  • A written scope listing tear-off, decking repair if needed, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and cleanup.
  • Shingles from manufacturers the division installs: GAF and CertainTeed.
  • Help gathering the product and color details your association asks for.
  • One company from the first visit to the final walkthrough.

Want a rough number before anyone visits? The Roofing Roughnecks instant roof estimate tool measures your roof from satellite and elevation data and emails a ballpark price range. It is a starting point, not a quote.
